The history of PBS NewsHour dates back to 1973 when Robert MacNeil and Jim Lehrer partnered to air the U.S. Senate Watergate hearings on public tv. Afterward, they created “The Robert MacNeil Report, a 30 minute news program which eventually began to be distributed by PBS. In 1983, the partners transformed The MacNeil/Lehrer Report into The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and became an full hour long broadcast of news. However in 1995, Robert MacNeil’s departed and the program was recreated as The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Soon after, under Lehrer’s direction, The NewsHour extended its reach in 1996 by launching a website. It was in 2009 that the PBS NewsHour was officially changed to PBS NewsHour with both TV and internet news operation.
