The Free File Alliance was founded in 2003. They have the official approval from the IRS to provide the following services:

  • free online tax filing
  • easy tax preparation
  • free e-filing

Free File Alliance is a nonprofit alliance of industry-leading tax software companies partnered with the IRS to provide free and secure electronic tax services to eligible taxpayers. The Free File Tax Agreement was put in place on October 30, 2002. It was a public-private partnership agreement signed officially by both the IRS and the Free File Alliance. The goal is to make tax filing and preparation easier and to provide greater access to free online services to taxpayers.
