Government Employees Insurance Company, GEICO, was founded by Leo and Lillian Goodwin in 1936. They began by focusing on federal employees and specific categories of enlisted military officers. However, in 1948 inventors were brought in investors to help expand and grow the company.  It was in 1996 that Warren Buffett bought a great amount of GEICO stock and thus made GEICO a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. In 2000 the Gecko was introduced in GEICO’s ad campaign. In 2014 GEICO went over the 13 million policy holder mark. They currently insure over 22 million vehicles.
